Department of Veteran Affairs National Social Work Program
The primary focus of the VA Social Work is to assist Veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors in resolving unmet social needs in core Social Drivers of Health (SDOH) domains to improve health and well-being.
Social work is woven into the fabric of VA health care, providing services in all clinical programs across the continuum of care. Social workers are available to assist you in a variety of settings to include the primary care clinic, during hospitalization, at Emergency Department visits, in mental health and rehabilitation units, and upon enrollment in specialty medical programs.
A Fisher House™ (https://www.socialwork.va.gov/fisher.asp) is a ”home away from home” for families and caregivers of Veterans and Service members receiving treatment at major military and VA medical facilities. VA Fisher House accommodations are provided at no cost to guests and located on or near the VA medical facility.
The VA’s IPVAP (https://www.socialwork.va.gov/IPV/Index.asp) is committed to helping Veterans, their partners, and VA staff who are impacted by IPV. If you, or someone you know could be experiencing and/or using IPV – help is available.
Through the National ACP-GV Program (https://www.socialwork.va.gov/ACP_GV.asp), VA offers interactive groups where Veterans and caregivers can join their peers to learn more about the process of planning for future health care needs known as, “advance care planning.” ACP-GV engages Veterans, caregivers, and those they trust in advance care planning by facilitating a group discussion that elicits personal experience(s) and encourages participants to identify a “next step” to take in the process of planning for future health care needs.
