Project Sanctuary
Project Sanctuary takes military families from battle ready to family ready, helping them THRIVE through an evidenced-based program built on compassionate advocacy, providing resiliency and reintegration tools, and reestablishing HOPE.
Project Sanctuary firmly believes that every military family possesses the inherent right and capability to heal. However, veterans and service members often encounter significant challenges when transitioning into a “new normal” after their service or deployment. Unfortunately, they frequently face these struggles alone, confronting higher rates of unemployment, addiction, suicide, and various other obstacles.
Project Sanctuary takes pride in being among the few organizations dedicated to serving veterans, spouses, caregivers, and children as a cohesive family unit. Shockingly, veterans are at a 50% higher risk of dying by suicide compared to civilians. The rates of suicide among active-duty personnel have surged to unprecedented levels since 2012, and tragically, 123 military spouses lost their lives to suicide in 2017. This underscores the critical importance of our mission.
Project Sanctuary’s comprehensive, evidence-based program stands out as one of the very few that addresses the needs of the entire family, encompassing active-duty service members from all branches of the military, as well as veterans from all eras of service. Through therapeutic retreats and ongoing family support services, we facilitate the reconnection of families, restoration of hope, and transformation of lives.
Project Sanctuary’s offerings are inclusive and LGBTQ+-friendly. We organize six-day therapeutic retreats for families and couples, currently operating in five states as of 2024: Washington, Georgia, Texas, Colorado, and Maryland. Project Sanctuary requests that each couple or family covers the transportation costs to and from their home to the retreat venue. Additionally, a $100 refundable commitment fee is required to reserve a spot for the retreat. This fee is reimbursed to the original payment method at the conclusion of the retreat, upon completion of the wrap-up survey. We strive to accommodate all health and mental health conditions through specialized workshops and access to licensed counselors.
